Buongiorno amici:
What is Hanukkah?
On the 25th of Kislèv of the year 3622, the Maccabees liberated the Temple in Jerusalem after defeating the numerous and powerful armies of the Greco-Syrian king, Antiochus IV, who had tried to eradicate the Jewish beliefs and observances of the people of Israel. The Jews repaired, cleaned, and rededicated the Temple for Divine service. Unfortunately, the invaders had broken all the supplies of pure oil certified by the High Priest. When the Jews wanted to light the Menorah, they found only a tiny jar of pure olive oil which would only be enough for one day. Miraculously the oil lasted eight days, long enough to get more oil. In memory of this miracle, the Sages established the Chanukka holiday, during which the lights are turned on every evening for eight days, recalling and publicizing the miracle.
