Night to remember for Finland after historic victory over Canada in front of huge travelling support

The 2023 Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga started with a bang today with debutants Finland thrilling thousands of travelling supporters by completing a historic victory over reigning champions Canada in an exhilarating quarter-final.

 

Milos Raonic had made a welcome return to the Canadian team with a faultless performance on his serve to overcome Patrick Kaukovalta in the first match. Jarkko Nieminen’s men bounced back as Otto Virtanen set-up a deciding doubles match by defeating Gabriel Diallo in the second singles match before partnering with Harri Heliovaara to claim victory over Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil and lead their nation to the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time.

 

Tomorrow will see Czechia take on Australia at 4pm CET to see who will meet Finland in Friday’s semi-final. Victory for Czechia would see them reach the semi-finals of the Davis Cup for the first time since 2014.
