Player quotes

Andy Murray: “They [Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori] won’t have played too much doubles together over the years. But Kei is obviously a classy tennis player, he has played a lot of doubles over the years and can play very well. I’ve played Daniel in singles, I lost to him at the Australian Open a few years ago. But me and Evo (Dan Evans) have practised a bit together. We have played tournaments together in the past. We have the potential to be a good team. But the Olympics doubles is different, because there’s a lot of pairings in there, you know a lot of the singles guys are playing that maybe don’t the rest of the year. There’s a lot of scratch pairings. But a lot of them can play extremely good tennis.

“I’m happy about it [ending career at the Olympics]. Look, a few months ago I didn’t know, I wasn’t happy about potentially stopping, I was quite unsure about it. But now that the time is here, now I’ve made that decision definitively, I feel good about it.”

Rafael Nadal: “My challenge is to be ready to give my best and then we’ll see what happens. You can’t foresee how things will go, how it’s going to feel on the court, but I try to make things go well. He [Marton Fucsovics] is a good player, he always competes very well.”

Stan Wawrinka: “I’m super happy and excited to be playing the Olympics. The Olympics is a dream of every athlete, not only in tennis but it’s a celebration of sports in general. So, I loved the experience in Beijing and in London. So I’m super excited to be here in Paris.

“I had the chance to win in Beijing with Roger [Federer] in doubles for the Swiss team. Of course it’s completely different, the experience. You live in the Village, with all the athletes, with all the Swiss team. It’s unbelievable. So I’m super happy to get the chance to play another Olympics. We’re an amazing team. I went to the Village with everybody yesterday. It was amazing.”

Elina Svitolina: “It is a huge honour to represent my country, to be among so many great Ukrainian athletes. It’s always been such a privilege to represent Ukraine. I just saw Roland Garros six weeks ago and it looks very different, but I’m happy that these Olympics are in Paris and it’s going to be another special one.”

Angelique Kerber: “It’s a tough match [against Naomi Osaka in first round]. I think it will be a good and interesting match, but I’m ready for that. I prepared as good as I can. I’m really looking forward to playing against her. Doubles the same. I’m not a player who’s playing a lot of doubles but I have a good doubles partner, so let’s see how far we can get in the doubles.

“It was always a dream when I was a kid to win a medal. When I won silver at Rio 2016 it was a dream come true for sure. To travel back with a medal feels good. To have it on my back in my career that I can always say that I won a medal, it means a lot.

“Of course it is one of the toughest decisions I made [to retire after the Olympics] but I will try to enjoy it as much as I can. I’m really proud to be part of the team. I’m really looking forward to it.”
